Frequently Asked Question

What is tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist — a medication that simultaneously activates two hormone receptors involved in appetite regulation, insulin secretion, and fat metabolism. Originally developed for type 2 diabetes under the brand name Mounjaro, tirzepatide has become one of the most widely used medications in physician-supervised weight loss programs across Georgia.

How tirzepatide works

Tirzepatide activates two receptors:

  • 1GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1): Slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite, and signals fullness to the brain after eating.
  • 2GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide): A second gut hormone that enhances insulin secretion and, when activated alongside GLP-1, appears to significantly amplify fat reduction effects.

This dual mechanism is why tirzepatide consistently outperforms semaglutide (a single GLP-1 agonist) in head-to-head comparisons. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, patients on the highest tirzepatide dose lost an average of 22.5% of body weight — significantly more than the ~15% seen with semaglutide.

Tirzepatide vs. semaglutide: which is better?

Neither is universally "better" — the right medication depends on your goals, health history, and how your body responds. For patients starting GLP-1 therapy for the first time with moderate weight loss goals, semaglutide is often an excellent first choice. Tirzepatide is typically recommended when:

  • You have a higher starting weight and need stronger initial results
  • You've plateaued or had a suboptimal response on semaglutide
  • You have type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance
  • Your provider determines you need a more aggressive protocol from the start
